Visits and Excursions
Essentials
Mexico is an amazing and fascinating country, combining colorful visits and natural land and sea treasures, as well as exotic panoramas that few trips can provide!
On this page of my site, I recommend tips and unmissable excursions to take during your stay. As well as good places to stay and eat.
Swim with turtles in Akumal
In Akumal Bay, you will have the opportunity, and even the honor, of swimming among these sea creatures. It is here that 3 species of turtles come to feed; the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). The necessary equipment is included during the excursion.
I strongly recommend this extraordinary activity to experience which will leave you with invaluable memories! This is an activity to be done in a group, with the family, alone, whatever.
During snorkeling, you also come across other species and quite splendid corals!
Warning ! It is forbidden to touch the turtles, as much for their safety as for ours. Also avoid putting on sunscreen or mosquito repellent before entering the water to avoid damaging marine life.
For sports enthusiasts, cycling in Mexico City and its surroundings
In recent years, Mexico City has had a self-service bicycle service to fight against pollution by offering an ecological means of transport. Mexico's Vélib' was born under the name "Ecobici".
It is possible to visit the city but also its surroundings by following cycling circuits which are carried out over several days. These marked routes offer an overview of Mexico, its history and its nature and in particular a 410 km trip to discover mythical places such as Teotihuacan and its pre-Columbian ruins classified as World Heritage by Unesco, or the Popocatepelt, a active volcano that dominates the city of Mexic o.
To rent your "bicicletas" it's free for the first 45 minutes, after the first hour of use, each new hour will be charged 35 pesos (1.55€).
The cenotes
In Mexico, there are many opportunities to swim and explore cenotes. With nearly 10,000 cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula, it's hard to choose! They can be found in cities, in the jungle, as well as in a field lost in the middle of nowhere. Filled with earth-filtered fresh water, they offer incredible visibility for observing underwater life, they are life-size aquariums.
Today, these chasms are open to everyone and some are even geared exclusively towards tourism with adapted facilities and nautical activities.
To live a unique experience, why not visit that of " Rio Secreto " (photos 7 & 8) a network of caves and underground rivers. There are several packages available for this excursion including access to the nature reserve, a guide, wetsuits, a buffet of Mexican food and drinks. Rates vary according to the package chosen (from 70.00 to 350.00€).
Palenque
In the Mexican state of Chiapas; visit these famous Mayan ruins lost in lush vegetation, populated by monkeys. Palenque was a pre-Hispanic city where the most important ceremonial center of the Mayan culture was concentrated, it is currently one of the 67 national parks in Mexico and one of the most visited archaeological sites in the country.
Internationally, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What is open to the public is essentially divided into 4 zones and it is only 2% of this great Mayan city because 98% of the ancient site would still be buried under the jungle, for centuries!
Entrance to the archaeological area costs $75 pesos (about 3€) per person,
Entrance to the national park costs $35 pesos (about 1.5€) per person,
Tourist guide on site: Between $100 and $500 pesos (between €4 and €20),
Parking: $20 pesos (about €1) per car.
Did you know ? Palenque means “surrounded by trees”.
Zipline in the Mexican Jungle
For nature lovers and adrenaline junkies, why not embark on this adventure! While crossing the trees, hanging from cables, you will slide down the zip line while admiring the beauty of the landscape offered by the Mexican jungle. This activity can be done anywhere in the country.
Often, the zip line in the middle of the tropical jungle is combined with other fairly sporting activities such as quad biking in the jungle, swimming in a cenote, abseiling, guided tours, etc...
In Barrancas del Cobre, in the state of Chihuahua, there is one of the longest zip lines in the world (2500 meters). On your way there, you will fly over the immense and fabulous gorges of the Sierra Madre at high speed!
Oaxaca and Monte Alban
The Zapotec archaeological site of Monte Albán is the essential point of your visit to Oaxaca during your trip to Mexico. The prestigious site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also take the opportunity to admire the fabulous candelabra cacti.
Entrance to the Monte Alban site is 80 Mexican pesos (€3.55).
Moreover, Oaxaca offers an inestimable wealth; Consisting of mountain ranges, numerous monuments, and local markets, Oaxaca promises you a total change of scenery!
